According to national statistics from 2023, one in 50 insured homes files a water damage claim each year and the average cost of a water damage claim is $10,000. Water damage isn’t only costly; it can also ruin precious personal possessions. Currently, there are no requirements for homes to have any sort of water sensor — which means it’s up to you to protect your house from this type of disaster on your own. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be costly.
More than 9,000 Amazon shoppers have bought and given a 5-star rating to the Govee WiFi water sensor, which has a starting cost of under $30 — certainly a far cry from the cost of water damage. Plus, you can clip the on-page coupon for a discount applied at checkout.
Here’s how it works: First, you download the Govee water sensor app. Then, you plug the gateway into an outlet and place the sensors around your house. For example, you may choose to put sensors in the basement, bathrooms, laundry room, under the kitchen sink or in your garage. After the gateway is paired to your WiFi and you’re all set up in the app, you’re good to go.
Any time one of the sensors detects any water, it will sound an alert and a notification will also pop up on your phone as well as in your email. That way, you’ll know if a leak occurred even if you aren’t home. Here’s what else is cool: You’ll be able to see through the app which sensor went off so you know where the leak is occurring.
The alarm has three volume levels to choose from, as well as a mute button so you can turn it off once you find the leak. The water protection gateway can support up to 10 sensors at once, so you can place them all around your house as needed to detect both dripping and leaking.
Being able to identify a leak as soon as possible (whether it’s from heavy rain, a burst pipe or a leaking appliance) means you can take action before your home and belongings are ruined. Especially if you live in an area prone to flooding, having this sensor will allow you to leave town without worrying if your home is okay; you’ll be able to monitor it using the app.
Still not convinced you need one? Check out these reviews from people who bought the Govee water sensor:
“We had to always deal with basement leaks through the years and had to sometimes get up in the middle of the night to see if any water had seeped into the basement when big storms hit us. Well, now, that is history. I tested them each before setting them up. They immediately notified me that there was a leak! I love it. What I love even more is that you can mute the actual sensors so that they don’t ring but only notify you on the cell phone instead of having to rush down to the basement and get them out of the water or leak area. I highly recommend them.” — Vince Garcia
“We’ve had water issues in the basement and finally got around to installing these — what a breeze! They are pretty much turnkey out of the box. I tested them by dripping water and they work and the alarm is loud; I can hear it from the whole house. It also sent me a notification in the app and via email. I’m going to order some more. The best part is the value for money — ADT wanted to charge me $50 to $100 a pop for each sensor. No way! Save yourself some money and get these.” — Amazon Customer
“Bought these and set them up a few days ago. This morning, I received an alert, an email and heard the alarm going off as my washer had begun overflowing with water and flooding the floor. Could not have been better timing on purchasing these. Saved me a lot of time and money! Will be purchasing a few more to add to other spots around the house.” — Lynn White-Huggins
“I got these after my condo flooded but they are great! I test them now and then and they always work by sending an email and an alert to my phone. Every home should have these.” — Christina W.
“We have a loved one with dementia who tends to try to flush things down the toilet all the time. This product has saved us several times since we are alerted as soon as the toilet overflows.
I have most of Govee products (refrigerated temp alarm) , water sensors around sump pumps, under sinks, etc; I also use the power control units to power things on and off on schedules. Thank you Govee! I am likely your biggest fan and product owner.” — Tim Messink
