With the remaining weeks of summer ticking away, I’m certainly not the only one eager to make the most of pub garden jaunts. My latest discovery was in Birchington-on-Sea, a quaint little seaside village nestled between Herne Bay and Thanet.
I initially set out to witness the charm of Minnis Bay beach for the very first time, but it wasn’t long before I was captivated by the sleek, welcoming Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie.
Operated by Shepherd Neame, this stylish watering hole is mere steps from the beach’s glistening sands, boasting an expansive outdoor seating area that beckons many a parched soul.
The fortunate coincidence of sunny skies and soaring temperatures during my visit meant that after a leisurely stroll along Minnis Bay, a quenching drink was unequivocally in order. What could I do but indulge myself at this fetching bar and eatery?
Touting itself on its website as “a relaxed, stylish location that offers truly outstanding views, great food, an extensive wine list, and friendly service”, the Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie is championed as Thanet coast’s ‘hidden gem’.
The establishment soars high with a commendable 4.2-star rating out of five on Google Reviews.
Patrons heap admiration on both the scenic locale and the staff, with one visitor branding it the “best thing about Birchington”. They added: “The staff were really friendly despite being very busy, and the iced coffees were perfect on a hot day.”, reports Kent Live.
“The position with the sea view was just gorgeous, and the bathrooms were Very clean.”
With such glowing reviews, I was eager to experience it for myself.
I dropped in after lunch, primarily to savour a cool beverage and soak up the renowned views. Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the refreshing drop in temperature indoors – a welcome relief after an afternoon under the sun.
Given that it was school holidays, it wasn’t surprising to find the bar bustling with patrons, both inside and in the garden area. The main building is divided into two sections: a laid-back bar area for those wanting to enjoy a drink, and a roomy restaurant for those seeking a full meal.
Both can be enjoyed outdoors as well, thanks to the chic patio terrace that stretches along the front of the building. As a Shepherd Neame establishment, I knew I’d be spoilt for choice with the drinks menu, as the franchise consistently offers the best local beers and spirits.
I opted for a pint of Spitfire, arguably one of Kent’s finest beers and a staple of Shepherd Neame. The fact that my pint cost £5.25 was a pleasant surprise, especially when many pubs and bars are charging nearly £6 for a beer.
With a refreshing beverage in hand, I made my way to the outdoor seating area and secured a table with a stunning view of the beach. The picturesque garden was as breathtaking as they said it would be, making it one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever visited.
The sunny weather and clear skies only added to the charm, leading me to concur with the sentiment that this is indeed the ‘best thing about Birchington’. However, there was a slight downside – a large amount of seaweed had washed up on the beach and under the scorching sun, it was emitting a rather unpleasant smell.
Although the smell wasn’t as strong on the patio as it was on the beach, it was still slightly noticeable but didn’t ruin my experience. My only regret was not choosing a shaded spot on the patio and forgetting to bring sunscreen.
Nonetheless, I sat back and savoured my pint while taking in the magnificent views, doing my best to ignore the burning sensation on my neck and shoulders. As I finished my drink, I contemplated getting another one to extend my stay, but unfortunately, I had to leave.
After my first visit to Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie, I wholeheartedly agree with the rave reviews. It’s a truly splendid place with friendly staff and appetising food that I’m keen to try on my next visit.
Despite ending the day with sunburnt neck and shoulders, I’d say the experience was well worth it.
