Brits looking to escape the dreary weather and make a fresh start this new year might consider swapping the UK’s grey skies for a sun-drenched life abroad. And what if your dream destination actually paid you to move there?
Italian towns are offering a tempting proposition that could see you pocketing cash ahead of your big move in a “win win” scenario.
In a bid to spark a population boom, some countries are laying out the welcome mat, hoping to attract new residents to revitalise certain areas. “It’s a win-win: you get a fresh start and a helping hand, while the local economies enjoy a much-needed boost,” explained Wayne Mills, head of Operations at Seven Seas Worldwide.
The scorching summer heat and stunning coastal scenery await in the picturesque towns of Presicce and Acquarica. Tucked away among the charming whitewashed hilltop towns of Italy’s “boot”, these locations offer the most enticing financial incentives for newcomers.
Meanwhile, Puglia stands in stark contrast to Britain’s chilly rains, boasting mild winters with temperatures seldom falling below 11°C and summer highs consistently soaring above 30°C.
For families making the move and investing in property, the region is ready to hand over €30,000 (£24,878). And there’s more – once you’re settled and decide to expand your family, an extra €1,000 (£829.55) per child will be yours.
To be eligible, all you need to do is purchase a house and declare it as your main residence. If you’re ready to unleash your inner entrepreneur, head over to Italy’s sun-drenched Calabria region, where they’re offering a tantalising €28,000 (£23,222) to kickstart any new business ideas.
“Calabria is on the southwestern tip of Italy, in one of the sunniest and quietest, most picturesque regions of Italy,” explained Mills. “This is the perfect chance to live the dreamy, small Italian village life.”
The scheme isn’t just for business people; it also welcomes individuals prepared to take on vital roles in the community, but you must be under 40 and move to Italy within 90 days of program acceptance.
Over on the idyllic island of Sardinia, those with an itch for island living and fixing up properties could get a handsome sum of €15,000 (£12,440). All you need to do is settle in the quaint town with fewer than 3,000 residents, purchase or renovate your home, and make it your primary residence within 18 months.
“This program aims to attract young people to Sardinia’s charming towns, rejuvenate local life, and keep the Italian countryside thriving,” commented Wayne. “Sardinia is one of the most beautiful parts of Italy, and being paid to live there is such an amazing deal, you’d be mad not to snap it up!”
If Italy doesn’t tickle your fancy and you’d rather stay closer to home, Ireland is offering up to €84,000 (£69,673) in cash grants for those ready to purchase and rejuvenate vacant homes on its picturesque coastal islands. “There are 30 coastal islands whose total population is only around 3,000 people,” Wayne explained.
“Ireland is aiming to revitalise and future-proof these stunning islands by attracting a newer, younger demographic.” The only stipulation is that you must be prepared to buy and refurbish one of these island treasures, and reside in it for a minimum of 10 years. “This scheme is open to everyone, but it’s particularly targeting remote workers and digital nomads,” Mills added.
“The Irish government is committing to enhance transport links, internet coverage, and health services as part of a comprehensive plan to invest in the islands’ future. They’re keen to attract remote workers to diversify the islands’ economies, so if you’re seeking a tranquil yet productive lifestyle, consider having Ireland’s awe-inspiring coastal views as your office backdrop!”.
