As the school summer holidays approach, finding budget-friendly family outings can be a daunting task.

With families keen to enjoy themselves without breaking the bank, online searches for ‘free tourist attractions near me’ have skyrocketed by an astonishing 5000 percent over the past month, as per data provided by Village Hotels. This mirrors a rising trend among UK families in search of economical leisure activities.

In light of this trend, Village Hotels has sifted through Tripadvisor data to pinpoint the top free family attractions in the UK with the highest proportion of five-star reviews.

Topping the list is The Potter Trail in Edinburgh, which commands an impressive 93.91 percent of top-tier reviews. Hot on its heels is the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford with 80.58 percent, and Durham Cathedral with 77.46 percent.

From world-class museums to distinctive cultural tours, the allure of free attractions is endless. With entrance fees often stacking up, the pursuit of cost-free options has led families to these highly-rated destinations, reports the Mirror.

1. The Potter Trail, Edinburgh – 93.91 percent

Securing 93.31 percent of five-star reviews, this is the premier free tourist attraction in the UK, according to Tripadvisor.

The Harry Potter-themed tour in Edinburgh takes visitors around magical locations inspired by the series. Potter enthusiasts can explore places where J.K. Rowling penned the books, and even learn a spell or two.

Each tour, lasting between 75 and 90 minutes, will guide groups of Muggles through the ancient city to uncover iconic Harry Potter locations, led by a knowledgeable guide well-versed in all things Hogwarts and Gillyweed.

During this magical journey, visitors will witness the final resting place of Lord Voldemort’s father, discover the cafe where J. K. Rowling penned the first Potter book and stroll down the real-life Diagon Alley – Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Potter enthusiasts can also determine their house affiliation at Edinburgh’s very own school of magic, learn about the world’s worst poet, and find out which Hogwarts teacher bears his name.

The tour, which won a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award in 2022, offers a lively and atmospheric experience suitable for families with children aged seven and above. According to the Potter Trail website, participants are encouraged to “bring something you can use as a wand on our tours. This can be anything roughly wand-shaped – pens, pencils and umbrellas are all welcome. The original walking tour is free, but visitors can choose to upgrade to a private tour with prices starting from £25. Rated five out of five overall on Tripadvisor, one tour-goer described it as.”

While the original walking tour is free of charge, visitors have the option to upgrade to a private tour with prices starting from £25.

With an overall rating of five out of five on Tripadvisor, one participant described the tour as “perfect for hard-core Potter fans and novices too”, while another simply urged, “Potter fans, go grab your wands”.

With its extensive collection of aircraft and interactive displays, plus a playground for the little ones, the museum promises an engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

3. Durham Cathedral, Durham – 77.46 percent

Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a testament to Northern England’s spiritual heritage, housing the remains of St. Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede.

The cathedral boasts stunning stained glass windows and a museum showcasing St. Cuthbert’s treasures within the historic confines of a medieval Benedictine monastery.

Ranked third, entry to this historical gem is free, though donations are welcome. Enthusiastic visitors share, “It was well worth the money and won’t break the bank for families wishing to visit on a budget. Like all cathedrals, it is so full of history with delightful stained-glass windows.”
